The field of psychiatry is well-known for the unique treatment methods applied to different cases of psychological problems. Such a unique and effective method is the animal assisted therapy or the pet therapy where the therapeutic effect of the company of an animal is used to cure the discomforts of the human minds.

It has been proven in more than a few cases of psychiatric disorder that the patients feel much better when they are around their beloved pets than when they are separated from them. In order to alleviate the mental discomforts of the patients and to bring them back in the normal mental condition, this curative impact of the company of the animals is used. The animals used for such medical purposes are named Emotions Support Animal and they are differentiated from the ordinary pets because of their special duty to provide emotional support to their psychologically disturbed owners. This differentiation is done on the basis of holding the service animal letter, the only legal document accepted in the USA as the proof of the animal’s identity as an ESA. This letter should be collected only from the renowned psychological clinics and any other type of identification is not regarded as being officially approved.

For the medical emergency of the uses of the service animals, some rules and laws have been launched for granting some special benefits to the owners of ESA. According to the Air Carrier Access Acton of 1986, patients having the ESA letter are capable of making their service animal travel with them in the airplanes, cruise ships, or any other public transport vehicle without paying any fare for the animal. The animals are permitted to have seats beside their owners in the cabin rather than being carried in the craters. In addition to this travelling facility, the owners of the ESA are allowed to have access to any public housing apartment without paying any pet deposit charges and this facility is granted by the Fair Housing Amendment Act of 1988.
